Nursing Degrees Available

There are multiple degrees available to become a nurse. And in order to become a Registered Nurse (RN), a student must enroll in an accredited school and program. A nursing student can acquire a qualifying degree in just 2 years, or continue on to attain a graduate degree for a total of 6 years. Following are some brief explanations of the nursing degrees that are offered to aspiring students in the Carle Place NY area.

  • Associates Degree. The Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is usually a two year program made available by community colleges. It prepares graduates for an entry level position in nursing in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, clinics or nursing homes. Many use the ADN as an entry into nursing and ultimately earn a higher degree.
  • Bachelor’s Degree. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) offers more extensive training than the ADN. It is typically a four year program offered at colleges and universities. Licensed RNs may be qualified to complete an accelerated program based on their previous training or degree and professional experience (RN to BSN). Those applying to the program might wish to progress to a clinical or administrative position, or be more competitive in the job market.
  • Master’s Degree. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is typically a 2 year program after acquiring the BSN. The MSN program provides specialization training, for example to become a nurse practitioner or focus on administration, management or teaching.

After a graduating student has obtained one of the above degrees, she or he must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) so as to become licensed. Additional requirements for licensing change from state to state, so don’t forget to check with the New York board of nursing for any state mandates.

Many patients in a hospital or home care environment spend more time with nurses than with physicians. Nurses frequently go into the profession out of a passion to tend to the needs of patients, including in situations of short-term treatment of illness and prolonged care of chronic ailments. This human side of the healthcare profession, as opposed to the research or analytical related elements, is attractive to many who decide to enter into a career in nursing. Nurses have a wide range of applicable skills and can choose from an assortment of work settings, such as home care facilities, doctor’s offices, health clinics, community centers and hospitals. Also, nurses can progress into a variety of specializations, including addictions, critical care, neonatology and genetics. Although many nurses provide personal patient care, others opt to be educators, policy consultants and pharmaceutical representatives.

    Carle Place station

Carle Place (previously known as Carll Place) is a station along the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). It is served by trains on the Port Jefferson Branch at all times while Ronkonkoma Branch and Montauk Branch trains bypass the station. It is located at Cherry Lane & Atlantic Avenue in Carle Place, New York.

Carle Place was built on March 1, 1837 with the opening of the LIRR to Hicksville. The station was closed sometime in 1859,[2] however it was revived in 1923 as a sheltered shed. In 1950, the station was removed and then relocated 400' east of the former location, opening on January 21, 1952. The station has existed as a pair of platformed shelters ever since then.[3] In October 1970, an electrification project took place at Carle Place station, along with the rest of the Port Jefferson Branch between Mineola and Huntington Stations.[4]

As part of the Main Line third track project, the Carle Place station will be upgraded to accommodate full-length 12-car trains. Canopies, benches, signage, and security cameras will be installed. The station will be made compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 via the installation of elevators and ramps, as well as the replacement of the existing overpass. Amenities such as Wi-Fi, USB charging stations, artwork, and digital information displays would be included in the renovation.[5] The electrical substation at Carle Place station will be replaced to make way for the third track.[6]
