Newcastle, Utah

Newcastle (also New Castle) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Iron County, Utah, United States. It lies along State Route 56, 30 miles (48 km) west of Cedar City.[3] Its elevation is 5,312 feet (1,619 m) above sea level.[1] Newcastle has a post office with the ZIP code of 84756.[4] The population was 247 at the 2010 census.[5] Newcastle was founded in 1910 by citizens of the more isolated Pinto.

The 2010 census reported 247 people and 92 housing units in the CDP. The 2010 census reported racial makeup was 88.7% White, 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, and 10.9% other races. Hispanic or Latino heritage comprised 19.0% of the population.[2]

Richmond, Utah

Richmond is a city in Cache County, Utah, United States. The population was 2,470 at the 2010 census,[3] with an estimated population of 2,535 in 2014.[4] It is included in the Logan, Utah-Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area..

Agrippa Cooper was the first settler in Richmond in the mid-1850s. Within a few years a scattering of log cabins, dugouts, and a log fort had been built. In 1860, a sawmill and a schoolhouse were erected.[5][6] The city was likely named in honor of LDS apostle Charles C. Rich, though it may also have been named for the rich local soil or for Richmond, London, the hometown of some of its English settlers.[6]

Holstein cows were brought to Richmond in 1904, and thrived so well that the town was recognized as Utah's Holstein center. In 1912, the Richmond Holstein Cow Show was the first in the county. Now called Richmond's "Black & White Days", the show continues into its 98th year, and features carnival rides, food vendors, and a horse pull parade.[5][8]

Sterling, Utah

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 235 people, 73 households, and 58 families residing in the town. The population density was 976.3 people per square mile (378.1/km²). There were 81 housing units at an average density of 336.5 per square mile (130.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 1.28% Native American, 0.43% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.70% of the population.

There were 73 households out of which 45.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.5% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.22 and the average family size was 3.72.

In the town, the population was spread out with 37.0% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.

North Salt Lake, Utah

North Salt Lake is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 16,322 at the 2010 census,[3] which had risen to an estimated 19,193 as of 2014.[4]

According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau,[7] as of 2016, there were 20,301 people in North Salt Lake. The racial makeup of the county was 75.4% non-Hispanic White, 0.3% Black, 0.8% Native American, 3.1% Asian, and 5.0% from two or more races. 13.5% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

North Salt Lake is located in southern Davis County; it is bordered to the north by Woods Cross, to the northeast by Bountiful, and to the south by Salt Lake City in Salt Lake County. According to the United States Census Bureau, North Salt Lake has a total area of 8.6 square miles (22.2 km2), of which 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2), or 0.80%, is water.[3]

Riverton, Utah

Riverton is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 38,753 at the 2010 census, but has since grown to 44,419.[3] Riverton is located in the rapidly growing southwestern corner of the Salt Lake Valley.[4]

In January 2016, city leaders approved an agreement to develop 543 acres of open land in western Riverton. The land was formerly owned by Suburban Land Reserve, a real estate arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[6] A major portion of that land is being developed to include a mixed-use shopping center called Mountain View Village. CenterCal Properties, the retail development company behind Station Park in Farmington, is the developer for the project.[6]

Phase 1 of Mountain View Village opened in June 2018. Businesses open now include: AT&T, Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, Harmon's, HomeGoods, Kirkland's, Michaels, MOD Pizza, Old Navy, PetSmart, Rita's Italian Ice, Sprint, The Good Feet Store, Tillys, T.J. Maxx, T-Mobile, Ulta Beauty, Verizon, and Cafe Zupas.[8] Additional retail, restaurant, and office space will be added as the project progresses in future phases, in addition to a luxury theater.

Syracuse, Utah

Syracuse is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. It is situated between the Great Salt Lake and Interstate 15, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Salt Lake City. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has seen rapid growth and development since the 1990s. The city population was 24,331 at the time of the 2010 census,[1] an increase of 158.9% since the 2000 census.

The city is located in northern Davis County on the eastern side of the Great Salt Lake. It is bordered to the north by West Point, to the northeast and east by Clearfield, and to the southeast by Layton. A causeway on SR 127 connects Syracuse to Antelope Island State Park in the Great Salt Lake.

As of the census of 2010, there were 24,331 people, and 6,362 households residing in the city. The population density was 2,793.46 people per square mile (1,736.69/km²). There were 6,534 housing units at an average density of 298.6 per square mile (115.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.6% White, 2.9% Asian, 1.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.6% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6% of the population.

Ogden, Utah

Ogden /ˈɒɡdən/ is a city and the county seat of Weber County,[4]Utah, United States, approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of the Great Salt Lake and 40 miles (64 km) north of Salt Lake City. The population was 87,325 in 2018, according to the US Census Bureau, making it Utah's 7th largest city.[5] The city served as a major railway hub through much of its history,[6] and still handles a great deal of freight rail traffic which makes it a convenient location for manufacturing and commerce. Ogden is also known for its many historic buildings, proximity to the Wasatch Mountains, and as the location of Weber State University.

Ogden is a principal city of the Ogden–Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which includes all of Weber, Morgan, Davis, and Box Elder counties. The 2010 Census placed the Metro population at 597,159.[7] In 2010, Forbes rated the Ogden-Clearfield MSA as the 6th best place to raise a family.[8] Ogden has had a sister city relationship to Hof (Germany) since 1954.

Originally named Fort Buenaventura, Ogden was the first permanent settlement by people of European descent in what is now Utah. It was established by the trapper Miles Goodyear in 1846 about a mile west of where downtown Ogden sits today.

Rockville, Utah

Rockville is a town in Washington County, Utah, United States. It is located along the Virgin River near the mouth of Zion Canyon. The city lies just outside the park boundary for Zion National Park; the park entrance is located approximately 5 miles (8 km) northeast of the town.

This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Rockville has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.[3]

As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 245 people, 119 households, and 63 families residing in the town. The population density was 29.3 people per square mile (11.3/km²). There were 142 housing units at an average density of 16.9 per square mile (6.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.76% White, 0.40% Asian, 1.21% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.88% of the population.

Tooele, Utah

Tooele (/tuˈɪlə/ (listen) too-IL-ə) is a city in Tooele County in the U.S. state of Utah. The population was 22,502 at the 2000 census, and 32,115 at the 2010 census.[5] It is the county seat of Tooele County.[6] About 30 minutes southwest of Salt Lake City, Tooele is known for Tooele Army Depot, for its views of the nearby Oquirrh Mountains and the Great Salt Lake.

The Tooele Valley had no permanent settlement when Mormon pioneers entered the Great Salt Lake Valley in July 1847; it was covered with abundant tall grass. The Mormons first used the valley as wintering grounds for their herds.[7] In September 1849, three families settled on a small stream south of present Tooele City. Other families slowly joined them, and by 1853 Tooele City Corporation was organized.

The 20th century brought more industrialization; in 1904 the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad built a line through the city, and in 1909 the International Smelting and Refining Company smelter was built in Carr Fork/Pine Canyon east of the city . The Tooele Valley Railway, a seven-mile line, ran from the smelter west to the Union Pacific Railroad main line. This line brought ore from various area mines to the smelter; later a 20,000 ft aerial tramway was also used to transport ore from the mine to the smelter. By 1941 a 22,000 ft tunnel had been completed through the mountain, to move ore to the smelter entirely underground. The smelter began processing copper in 1910, with lead and zinc processing commencing in 1912. In 1946 the copper smelter ceased operation, the zinc operation halted in 1968, and the lead processing was halted in 1972. The entire site was demolished during 1972-74. However, consideration was being given during this latter period to extracting ore from Carr Fork Canyon, rather than relying on the ore from the east face of the mountain range. In 1969 the mining company began exploration drilling. In 1974 a copper mine and mill ("Carr Fork Operations") was started; it began processing ore in 1979, and ran until 1981. The Tooele Valley Railway was used to haul away the scrap when the International smelter was torn down, and remained to serve the Pine Canyon mill. It was shut down and abandoned when the Pine Canyon “Carr Fork” mine and mill shut down; its last day of operation was 28 August 1982.[8]

Orangeville, Utah

Orangeville is a city in northwestern Emery County, Utah, United States, at the edge of the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The city is at the junction of State Routes 29 and 57, straddling the banks of Cottonwood Creek. The population was 1,470 at the 2010 census.[3]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,398 people, 430 households, and 350 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,073.5 people per square mile (415.2/km²). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 361.7 per square mile (139.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.43% White, 0.07% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.50% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.22% of the population.

There were 430 households out of which 51.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.7% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.4% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.25 and the average family size was 3.68.
